Now that I am officially self-employed and will mostly be working from my home (if you haven’t caught up my big news, then I insist you go back a post and read all about it) I knew I would need a decent work space. If you read this blog regularly then you are no stranger to my London rent rants and probably already know that I live in a very small studio flat that costs me the same price as a house up North. I do love this little nest that the Beard and I have created but my goodness it’s cluttered with crap. Because it’s so small we feel even more enclosed by all our clutter than we would if we had a house or a two-bed (which is why I wrote this Space Saving Post).
Despite originally moving into our little nest with nothing but our travel backpacks, the place has slowly filled up with crap we don’t need. And my once spotless corner, where I used to be able to sit and write, has slowly become the corner of junk. Seriously, look how bad it got…
I call it junk now, but three days ago I wouldn’t have. Three days ago I would have called it very-important-stuff-I-need-that-cannot-be-thrown-away. But then I realised that I need my own work space, a fresh clean desk where I can write and blog. So I decided to have a proper clear out. By proper, I mean one my Northern mum would be super proud of. When it came to getting rid of stuff, I had to ask myself ‘Will I use this over the next month?’ If I said No, out it went. About 80% of the junk from the corner either got the Boot or was put in a charity bag.
It took me three hours to dissect the mess I have spent the past 18 months creating. There was half empty beauty products, fancy unused hair accessories, a billion pens with no ink, dead batteries, about four bottles of fake tan which I found worrying considering I’ve only used fake tan ONCE in the past 12 months, how long had they been there? I also found seven, yes, seven notebooks – of course I couldn’t throw those away and so have started an accidental notebook collection. Which is fine because I love notebooks. There is something wonderful about writing on that very first page of a fresh notebook! (#NotebookPorn anyone?)
I am also the type of person who cannot work in clutter. Everytime I sit down to write, I lose about an hour out of my allotted time because I have to tidy the whole flat first. I cannot sit down at my laptop to write until the floor is completely clear, the washing in the machine, the bed made, the radiators clear of drying clothes – it drives my boyfriend crackers! And it even annoys me too, but for some reason I find it easier to write when I’m not surrounded by mess. But I guess a de-cluttered home means a de-cluttered mind.
But I’m so glad I did it. It may have taken three hours, but now my desk is Beautiful. I added my lovely Cheerz Polaroid pictures to my ‘Office Wall’. The photos are a complete mix of family, friends, trips abroad and blogger events, so if I need inspiration I can just look up. Of course I had to add my flowers to the desk corner, just to give it that Pinterest look. I’ve got my jar of pencils, pens, highlighters and … nail files? I’ve kept my hair & make-up box as well as my jewelery stand on the desk, mainly for convenience. But all my beauty and blogger products I’ve moved into tidy boxes under the desk and I’m determined not to let this new beautiful work corner of mine get out of hand.
It’s no longer the corner of junk. It is now the Blog Corner!
