An ‘Early Bird Special’ isn’t something I’d normally opt for on a Friday night – or ever – it doesn’t exactly sound glamorous. But when we visited Bristol last month our Friends told us about an amazing deal at The Ox restaurant. A 6oz Rump steak served with fries, the sauce of your choice and a glass of house wine, all for just £12.50. The only catch being that this offer is exclusively for between the hours of 5pm and 7pm (Monday to Saturday). But with a deal as good as that I could quite easily make every Friday night an early one.
The Beard and I were joined by our Friends, Gem and Chris, who live together in Bristol. After a few drinks at their local brew-dog they whisked us off to The Ox. This elegant and decorative restaurant is fit for a Queen, think mahogany tables, chesterfield style chairs and 19th century art. It has quite a romantic feeling to it too; it’s dimly lit with candles across all the tables giving it an intimate yet cosy setting.
The Ox serves up tasty British food and our 5.30pm steak was no disappointment. I went for medium and chose peppercorn sauce to accompany it, this was served in an adorable mini saucepan (I’m afraid I don’t know the fancy kitchen-tech term for it) Gem and I decided to order the house white to enjoy as soon as were seated, whilst the boys ordered some beers and asked for their wine to be served once their steak was.
I can’t compliment the chef enough, my steak was perfectly cooked and super tasty. The chips were good too. In fact I ate every last scrap of my meal. Although not included in the Early Bird Special, I decided to splash out and order a dessert. I chose the Sticky ginger pudding with Banana Ice cream (£6), whilst the other three ordered themselves a double espresso each. I’ve got such a sweet tooth and love my desserts, and I have to say this was one of the best puddings I’ve had in a long time! Sorry to be lame and use Instagram terms, but this was #NomNomNom. I was practically licking the plate with my tongue (and would have, but common decency stopped me). The cutest touch was the vintage sweet tin that the bill came in with a some mints placed inside it too.
I’ve no doubt The Ox puts on a fabulous dinner and lunch menu, but if you happen to be in Bristol and on a budget, yet want somewhere a little fancy and upmarket, I absolutely recommend The Ox Early Bird Special, click the pic below to be taken to their site and book your table.
